The date was chosen because 14 July is the midpoint between International Women\u2019s Day and International Men\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 170px; margin-bottom: 20px; border-radius: 10px; overflow:hidden;\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 170px;\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/player.captivate.fm\/episode\/7629549a-7cb8-4d12-94c5-aeac7ea703af\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Podcast show notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Frankie prefers to be referred to using singular \u2018they\u2019 pronouns, while Joseph prefers either \u2018she\u2019, \u2018he\u2019 or \u2018they\u2019 pronouns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conversation, Frankie and Joseph discussed the impact of the case Norrie v Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, which was a case that allowed for Norrie mAy Welby to have their sex registration marked as \u2018non-specific\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.co.nz\/legal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/08\/Untitled-design-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1974\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.co.nz\/legal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/08\/Untitled-design-8.png 620w, https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.co.nz\/legal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/08\/Untitled-design-8-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption><em>Pictured from left: Joseph Black, a Juris Doctor Student at the University of Sydney, Amila Perera, a Legal Editor at Thomson Reuters and Frankie Sullivan, NSW Legal Aid lawyer.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As Frankie noted, \u2018it&#8217;s a pretty big deal to have the highest court in this country endorsing [the idea that] gender is something that&#8217;s beyond the binary\u2019. However, although this case represented a significant step in legal recognition of non-binary identities, there is still a long way to go in really recognising sex and gender as two distinct parts of a person\u2019s identity. As Frankie explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo have that non-specific marker on your identity documents, you still need to have some sort of affirmation surgery, which is, again, quite restrictive and quite limiting for various reasons. So even though it&#8217;s recognised, I think it&#8217;s hard to actually get that lawful status. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;You need to\u2026check a whole bunch of boxes, at least in New South Wales in order to be entitled to that nonspecific gender marker.\u201d<\/p><cite>&#8211; Frankie Sullivan, NSW Legal Aid lawyer<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation highlighted how important it is for law and policy recognition of gender diversity to be reflected in day to day experiences. In discussing the kinds of things that help them to feel comfortable with their gender identity in professional spaces, both Frankie and Joseph emphasised the value of others being receptive and respectful of their gender expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph has become more comfortable with expressing their identity in the ways they would like, in part, because they have been able to situate themself within a supportive community that clearly signals inclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIncorporating these symbols that indicate this is a safe space can help indicate to me that this is a safe environment that&#8217;s inclusive and work and feel comfortable. I think things like this event celebrating international Non-Binary [People&#8217;s] Day could be helpful and appreciated.\u201d<\/p><cite>&#8211; Joseph Black, Juris Doctor Student at the University of Sydney<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For Frankie, navigating court appearances as a young lawyer has meant that they announce themself in court using the title \u2018Mx\u2019, rather than \u2018Mr\u2019 or \u2018Ms\u2019. Frankie spoke about being pleasantly surprised by how easily their preferred title was adopted by fellow lawyers and judges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s] obviously a little bit tricky, and it&#8217;s been a bit awkward at times. But there&#8217;s just been a real willingness from the people I work with and within the courts to try and\u2026that\u2019s been a really positive thing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Enjoyed the insights from today\u2019s podcast?
