Stand Out&#8221;.<\/em>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been research recently that\u2019s shown bullying and harassment are very high in the legal profession and that is intolerable,\u201d he added, referring to a report released by the International Bar Association (IBA) <a href=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/posts\/international-bar-association-survey-data-exposes-bullying-and-harassment-in-legal-profession\">exposing bullying and harassment in legal profession<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the IBA survey of almost 7,000 respondents across 135 countries, half of women lawyers and one-third of male lawyers have been bullied in the workplace. Kirby shared with Mordaunt that he had come across several bullies during his legal career, including high up the ranks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve known a few judge bullies in my time. In the old days\nthere wasn\u2019t much you could do about it, but now people have recourse to\ncomplaints mechanisms and they should use it,\u201d Kirby said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former High Court judge also revealed that, in a sense, he\u2019d\nbeen bullied by society in the past. For decades he reluctantly \u201cplayed along\nwith the bullies\u201d and didn\u2019t disclose his sexual orientation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that changed during the AIDS crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce the AIDS epidemic came along, it all seemed so trivial\nand pathetic in comparison to the suffering that was going on,\u201d he said. \u201cSo\nthat is really what got me to take a stand [and come out] with my partner\nJohan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy standing up and being counted we will change the world,\u201d\nKirby said. \u201cWhat has happened in my lifetime is a revolution. And the\nrevolution continues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That revolution did indeed continue when Kirby married his\nlong-time partner Johan van Vloten in February 2019, some 50years\nafter their first meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stand Up. Stand Out.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s Wear It Purple Day theme \u2013 \u201cStand Up, Stand Out\u201d \u2013 pays tribute to role models like Mr Kirby, while acknowledging that even in 2019, not every LGBTIQ person feels safe to come out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young LGBTIQ activist Mordaunt acknowledged this reality at\nthe Thomson Reuters launch of Wear It Purple Day in Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite numerous successes the LGBTIQ community has\nwitnessed over the years, it\u2019s important to remember the struggles this\ncommunity still faces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLGBTIQ young people are five times more likely to attempt suicide and twice as likely to self-harm compared to their peers.
