Dr Anna High is a Lecturer at the University of Otago Faculty of Law. Anna’s research to date has focused on socio-legal and comparative aspects of child rights, and Chinese child welfare law.
Background
Before coming to Otago, Anna was Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence and Luce Postdoctoral Fellow at Loyola University Chicago School of Law (2015-2017), and Visiting Assistant Professor at Marquette University Law School (2012-2014).
Anna holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Queensland. She graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Law, Master of Philosophy (Law) and Doctor of Philosophy (Law) from the University of Oxford where she was a Rhodes Scholar (Queensland & Magdalen 2008). Anna has practiced commercial law in Australia and clerked in Hong Kong and Shanghai. She has extensive China fieldwork experience, and speaks conversational Chinese Mandarin.
Presentation at 2017 New and Emerging Scholars Symposium
Her presentation for the Symposium is entitled “One Eye Open, One Eye Closed: The Role and Regulation of China’s Foreign-Run Orphanages” and draws on her doctoral research. The project involves a socio-legal analysis of the negotiated existence of quasi-legal child welfare non-profits in China and their interactions with the local state, both within and beyond the restrictive formal legal framework for Chinese charities.
